Services

Seven services, one trade

Windows and doors are the whole business, residential and commercial alike. There is nothing else on the price list.

01

Window repair

Main service

Sash cords and weights, balances, operators, locks and seals. Kentucky's older housing runs on original sash, and these windows were built to be serviced.

02

Broken window & glass replacement

Openings cleared and secured the same visit, then glazed properly once the glass is cut. Storm, ice, impact and forced entry.

03

Foggy window & seal repair

Failed sealed units replaced inside your existing sash. We do not offer defogging, and the page explains why.

04

Sliding glass door repair

Rollers, tracks, panel height, latches and seals on the patio door that has started taking two hands.

05

Door repair

Entry, interior and storm doors that stick, sag, drag or will not latch. The slab is almost never the part that failed.

06

Commercial glass & storefront doors

Closers, pivots, locks and storefront glazing, including historic Main Street frontages. Scheduled around your trading hours.

07

Window screen repair

Rescreening in aluminium and original wooden frames, corner repairs, custom sizes, pet and solar mesh.

Our position

Almost nothing we are called to needs replacing

A sash cord parts. A balance loses tension. Four rollers flatten under a patio door. A closer fails on a shop door. A strike plate drifts three millimetres and a door stops latching. These are components on an assembly that is otherwise sound, and they cost a fraction of what replacing the opening costs.

The reason replacement gets recommended anyway is rarely dishonesty. It is that the companies doing the quoting sell replacement units, and a replacement is what they have to offer. DerbyFix does not sell them. There is nothing on our price list except the repair.

That matters particularly in a commonwealth with this much original building. Old Louisville holds one of the largest preserved Victorian districts in America. Lexington, Covington, Paducah, Bardstown and a hundred county seats hold thousands more buildings whose windows and doors were made from the outset to be taken apart and serviced — standing in openings that have moved enough over a century that a modern replacement would have to be packed into them anyway.

When replacement genuinely is the right call, we say so plainly, we do not quote you for it, and we tell you to call somebody else. That costs us the job, and it is the entire point.

Three levels

We quote to the level the opening actually needs

One of the things that makes repair quotes hard to compare is that nobody says how deep they are going. We do, on every service page and on every estimate.

Level 1

Tune and adjust

The opening works but works badly. Few parts, or none at all.

  • Realignment and adjustment
  • Cleaning and lubrication
  • Drainage cleared
  • Often the whole fix

Level 2

Component repair

The common case. One or two parts have failed and get replaced.

  • Balances, cords, rollers, closers
  • Locks, keepers and hardware
  • Seals and weatherstrip renewed
  • Everything in Level 1

Level 3

Overhaul

For something worth doing properly, usually once in its life.

  • Sash or panel removed and serviced
  • Reglazing and timber repair
  • Rehanging and re-squaring
  • Everything in Level 2

We will always tell you which level we think it needs and why, including when that is the cheapest one. Quoting a Level 3 overhaul on a window that needed a Level 1 adjustment is how this trade gets its reputation.

Kentucky conditions

Humid air, old buildings and ground that moves

Four things account for most of the work we do across the commonwealth, and only one of them is age.

Humidity, most of the year

Kentucky sits in one of the more humid parts of the country, and the Ohio valley corridor is damper still. Timber swells shut through a long warm season, sealed units are worked hard by high dew points, and anything left damp stays damp. "It will not open" is our most common spring call and it is almost always this.

Karst ground and clay

Central Kentucky sits on limestone karst, and other parts of the commonwealth on shrink-swell clay. Both move buildings in ways that rack an opening slowly out of square. A sash or a door that fitted for decades starts binding on one side, and the ground is the cause rather than the joinery.

Ice rather than snow

Kentucky's defining winter hazard is freezing rain. Ice loads frames and storm doors, brings branches down through glass, freezes sweeps to thresholds and refreezes in patio door tracks. It does damage in a few days that a dry cold snap never would.

Severe weather from both ends of the year

Spring and autumn both bring damaging wind and hail, and western Kentucky has taken serious tornado damage within living memory. Glass and screen damage here arrives across whole elevations rather than one window at a time.

Around the commonwealth

Kentucky is several different jobs sharing one name

An Old Louisville Victorian and a Bowling Green subdivision have almost nothing in common except the word "window".

Louisville & the Ohio valley

Old Louisville's Victorians, the shotgun houses of Germantown and Portland, and the river-corridor damp that works on all of them. Original sash on cords and weights, stained and leaded glass, and a great deal of historic-district work where repair is both the right answer and the permitted one.

Lexington & the Bluegrass

Older central neighbourhoods alongside substantial newer building, and the limestone karst underneath all of it. Ground movement racking openings is more common here than anywhere else we work.

Northern Kentucky

Covington, Newport, Florence and the river towns. Dense older housing, steep sites, and commercial frontages on historic Main Streets that need repairing in keeping rather than replacing.

Bowling Green & the south

Fast suburban growth on top of serious cave and karst country. Builder-grade windows and patio doors reaching the age where balances, rollers and seals fail together.

Western Kentucky

Paducah, Owensboro, Henderson and the towns out toward the Mississippi. Flatter, more exposed, and the part of the commonwealth with the hardest recent experience of severe storms.

Eastern Kentucky

The mountain counties and river valleys, where flooding and damp do more damage to sills, thresholds and frames than anything that happens above ground level.

Questions

What people ask before they call

Do you sell replacement windows or doors?

No, deliberately. It is the whole reason our recommendation about repairing yours carries weight.

My sash will not stay up.

A cord has parted on older wood sash, or a balance has failed on a newer one. Routine either way, and neither needs a new window.

My windows fogged up between the panes.

The sealed glass unit has failed and moisture is inside it. We replace the unit in your existing sash. We do not offer defogging, because it clears the view without restoring the seal.

Everything is swollen shut by August.

Kentucky humidity, usually with paint build-up as well. The sashes can be freed without damage and will work normally afterwards.

We are in a historic district.

That usually works in favour of repair. Districts commonly restrict altering original windows, and a proper sash repair sidesteps a review that a replacement would trigger.

Do you work on commercial buildings?

Yes — storefront doors, closers, pivots, locks and glazing, scheduled around trading hours. We do not do powered operators or certified panic hardware, and we will say so.

Will you come out for one small job?

Yes. Screens, locks and strike plates are a normal part of the week. Mention anything else while we are there, because most of the cost is the visit.

Do you serve my town?

We work across the whole commonwealth — Louisville, Lexington, northern Kentucky, the south, the west and the eastern counties.
